1784, THE TESTBED is a new workspace launched by Korea’s leading web portal, NAVER. It is also a testbed where all advanced technologies such as robotics, AI, cloud computing, and mobile control are continuously fused together to support executive tasks and evolve into a new innovative service. The number 1784 refers to both the site’s land lot number, 178-4, and the year of the first industrial revolution. This became the name of NAVER’s second headquarters, representing “the merit of experimentation and challenge” as well as “a space where innovation becomes reality”.
1784 was planned with a refined design vocabulary. A form designed with a specific intent cannot house everything. Due to the potential changes in the service, organisation, and user diversity, it was crucial to create a platform with no predefined space. Built as an erected framework that is purely empty to accommodate infinite potentials, 1784 provides a homogeneous environment devoid of designated programmes, allowing the use of the platform to adapt continuously. As an infrastructure in which architecture and various ICT technologies are integrated, it is well-prepared and has the required functions to house anything.
Three cuboid masses are placed harmoniously next to the first HQ. The space between the three masses is connected by three naturally-lit atriums, where people can gather, share their work and explore new fusion technologies. The project employs a Multiple and Kinetic Skin Facade that uses natural energy and minimises artificial energy to enable visual communication with the outside world. A low-energy hybrid air conditioning system combines radiant cooling, floor cooling, and heating to provide a comfortable environment for each user and zoning. A controlled lighting system can be customised to specific needs, and a structural system with rigorous safety standards ensures a safe working environment.
To create a user-oriented spatial platform, additional systems reflecting various types of latest technology and design have been combined with NAVER’s robotic, AI, Cloud, and 5G technologies. As long as the physical performance of the building allows it, the applied technologies will evolve in tandem with the data gathered while they were in use.
The design teams aimed to minimise production in the construction and materials used. Instead, their physical characteristics and interactions with the environment were highlighted. In addition, an achromatic framework made of materials like exposed concrete, stainless steel, aluminium, and glass was created to reflect the 1784 brand identity of “Tech Convergence”. Then, different people and activities were placed inside to create a new spatial platform that will guide NAVER’s future.
