Students with visual impairment still take notes by writing braille. However, this means that they are writing at 20 characters a minute (normal students write at 80 characters a minute). There are also difficulties integrating and structuring knowledge without vision (Warren, 1994), leading to heavy reliance on parents and teachers as their information resources. The Learning Recorder is designed to help blind students take notes efficiently and construct the knowledge system with more autonomy. It integrates current learning approaches and resources for blind students, while lowering the threshold for constructing a knowledge system and helping blind students understand information hierarchies through tangible, physical interactions.
With the recorders, students can easily record lessons, mark key timings in class and locate the marks after class. The three concentric circular knobs and bu-ttons, which represent three information hierarchies, help blind students understand the knowledge structure. Students can also share their marks with each other by connecting two devices. An app allows teachers and parents to upload listening materials to the recorders or supervise the students’ learning process.
