Shift to Regenerative Mobility is a special collaboration project between Hyundai Transys (Global automotive parts manufacturer) and Lineapelle (world leather trade fair). The project’s goal is to reduce waste while also regenerating tanning waste into new innovative materials. Due to the design complexity and high-quality demands, a large amount of leather waste is generated during the manufacturing process. As a result, there was a need for solutions to deal with the leftover leathers.
To achieve true zero waste, this project proposes sustainable processes, materials, and methods. A fabric made of mixed upcycled leather and PET yarn is applied to the main sections of the seat. The seat bolsters are also covered in weaving leather using a timeless braided weave design created through a manufacturing process that minimises waste and focuses on quality. The leather scraps are recovered in a circular manner and transformed into a new form of leather fabric. Not only are the process and material recycled, but so are the frame and mock-up.
The seat concept also reflects the value of sustainability through a design concept titled “Seoul to Milan”, which connects the two cities through colours and patterns — “Seoul Grey” for the Korean capital’s metropolitan cityscape and granite peaks, and “Milano Brown” for the Italian city’s classical architecture. Seoul and Milano are cities where the past, present, and future ideals coexist peacefully; both are uniquely attractive in terms of arts and culture, yet they are constantly evolving towards the future with innovative technologies and creative concepts. The “continuity of time” shared by the two cities is expressed through unique colours and iconic patterns that represent the eternal beauty and diverse values of the cities.
In terms of features, the front seat can be swivelled so that the driver can communicate with passengers in the back; and the seat has a long sliding mode that allows it to move backwards generously for ample leg room. The driver can control everything in the car by using the smart armrest, and the VIP seat can recline to zero gravity. These functions and arrangements combine to create a multipurpose living space that provides a unique passenger experience.
This project began with a concern for humanity and a sustainable future. All of the collaborators shared their knowledge, expertise, and innovation beyond the boundaries of their industries and countries. As a result, the project was made possible by a shared vision for a more sustainable future, for humanity to live a happier and more valuable life, and for a healthier and cleaner environment on the planet we inhabit.
