The Nanugi is an UPCYCLING DESIGN PROJECT and product line by the Daegu-Gyeongbuk Design Center (DGDC). Daegu has long been a hub of textile and fashion industries. In 2011, a movement started to create new values by using the disposed and unwanted fabric. This was the start of The Nanugi. The project has reduced environmental pollution by recycling textile wastes and create jobs for small local sewing shops, elderly people and career-interrupted women. In addition, part of the revenue is donated.
The Nanugi has developed 98 different products and manufactured about 140,000 units over the past five years, using a variety of fabrics wastes donated by about 40 textile firms. So far, KRW 53 million has been donated to NGOs to help the children from low-income families. Furthermore, this campaign has created 450 jobs directly and indirectly.
Plenty of time and effort is made in planning the best products that can be made, ba-sed on the properties of the donated fabrics, which always varies. The Nanugi does not only appeal to good intentions but also create the best products with good designs and functions. The Nanugi is currently trademarked with six registered designs. It has won several awards and is distributed in several shops in Korea.
