Many commercial renovation projects that prioritise the “consumable” features of a location end up being little more than architectural restyling. With the goal of challenging established practices and consolidated spaces, and to promote equality in urban conditions, a public amphitheatre is proposed on the previously inaccessible rooftop of Hisense Mall on Qingdao’s Fushan Bayfront.

Despite being blessed with the city’s temperate climate and an array of nearby sightseeing attractions, Hisense Mall is disconnected from the urban context due to its impermeable architectural form and a rather interior-focused dimension. The marina’s street view of the bay is obstructed and can only be enjoyed from the rooftop, which is inaccessible to most. This compelled the team to deviate from the original design brief’s expected outcome: “a glass hall with a fancy shape to provide catering services for our VIP guests.” Instead, the extension project aims to transform a commercial space into a more vibrant place for public encounter and possibility.

This amphitheatre would be a naturally lit hall for collaboration and consumption, with a public space on top where people could enjoy the privileged scenery and free public performances. The spatial programmes are innovatively layered to create a unique but appropriate synergy by combining site, context, form, and compatible functions. This public amphitheatre is envisioned as a magnetic space with an inviting aura that draws people in and a natural presence that matures over time.
