Printed Pottery was inspired by a visit to the Dai village in Yunnan Province, China, where Dai pottery used by generations resembles the early pottery of Chinese Central Plains ancestors from 3000 to 4000 years ago. They are made using coiling techniques and then shaped by wood prints, which leave ordered patterns on the objects’surfaces.
While human society has undergone massive changes as a result of the technological revolution, ceramic 3D-printing technology retains the creative logic and material imprint of early ceramic methods. Printed Pottery uses parametric design methods and 3D printing technology to establish a technological dialogue that spans time and space between ‘primitive’ and ‘advanced’.
The shape and texture of Printed Pottery objects are generated by computer parametric design, which mimics the randomness and uniqueness of traditional creations. At the same time, it creates a sense of light and shadow, emphasising the plain and undecorated texture of the pottery surface. The colour of the objects does not come from different clay, but rather, like the early pottery, through oxidation and reduction reactions.
