the history of Ho Kow Hainanese Kopitiam《THE HIDDEN GEM ON LORONG PANGGUNG》Ho Kow Hainam Kopitiam was established by Mr Ho Kow’s father Ho Kee Soon in 1956. Originally called Soon Kee, its name was changed to its current one when the younger Ho took over the business. The older Ho came to Kuala Lumpur from the Hainan province in China in search of a better living and found himself selling Hainanese goodies like tea, soft-boiled eggs and toasts on Lorong Panggung in Chinatown. The locals nicknamed Lorong Panggung “Little Ghost Lane” due to its popularity as a site of congregation for seedy people who frequented gambling halls, opium dens and brothels. It has also been said that the moniker was derived from the Cantonese residents who lived on the street calling their young children “little ghosts”. When Mr Ho Kow took the helm of the tea shop, he redesigned the menu and decided to sell only one main course each day – a change that brought more customers to his doors, always eager for more and for something different. Today, Ho Kow Hainam Kopitiam is in the hands of Mr Ho Kow’s daughter Ho Sook Chan, who has honed her skill as a Hainanese coffee expert during the decades working with her father and grandfather. In May 2018, the owners of the storied coffee shop moved out of its 60-year-old address after receiving an eviction order. They decided to resume business in a shophouse next to the original one, to the delight of the kopitiam’s loyal customers. And with the third and fourth generations behind the coffee bar, the legacy of Ho Kow Hainam Kopitiam lives on.
