What long-haul flights in economy class are for passengers, the optimisation of economy class seats is for designers: a real challenge, because travel as well as innovation in the economy class sector can only take place in a highly confined space. The designers are also faced with the task of reconciling conflicting interests in the design process – passenger comfort on the one hand and a reduction in weight and costs for the airline on the other. According to the jury, the RECARO CL3810 economy class seat succeeds in this in an exemplary manner: “This aircraft seat integrates new functions and design elements that improve functionality, visual quality and comfort, while at the same time saving weight through a prudent use of materials.” The CL3810 convinces with many small improvements that, in combination, make a big difference: In terms of passenger comfort, it offers about 2.5 cm more knee space and shin clearance when compared to its predecessor. The slimming down of the backrest has also improved the visual space, while narrower armrests further increase the space available. The seat features modern upholstery materials and is optimised from an ergonomic point of view for a comfortable sitting position and full-body support. Modern in-flight entertainment components such as a tiltable 13-inch monitor, charging ports and a holder for a tablet or smartphone embedded in the fold-out table are coherently integrated. In addition, airlines have the option to enhance the flight experience with optional “Economy Class +” components, such as individually adjustable headrests as well as privacy screens. The interests of the airlines, on the other hand, are safeguarded by the fact that the use of new and lightweight materials saves around 1.5 kg of weight per seat when compared to its predecessor, which reduces the overall weight of the aircraft and thus fuel costs. Thus, according to the jury, the RECARO CL3810 represents an outstanding seat for economy class, reveals a coherent design concept and, in compliance with aviation specifications, conveys the manufacturer’s brand values by combining functionality with comfort and an appealing, recognisable appearance.
