ERGO is a bedroom collection designed by Ross Lovegrove for Natuzzi Italia on the occasion of the brand’s 60th anniversary. In this collection of furniture, Lovegrove, one of the greatest exponents of organic design, interprets the Natuzzi sense of devotion, inspiration and gratitude towards mother earth. Each element draws on the surfaces and motifs of nature, and is designed to be the perfect companion to everyday living.

ERGO’s archetypal shapes are both a point of arrival and starting point; a beginning. The bedroom is both primordial and futuristic, and the bed looks like a primitive couch, shaped only by the silent, incessant etching of time. In truth, it is a modern translation of 21st-century organic technology featuring environmentally friendly, responsibly sourced and renewable materials, including wood from FSC-certified plantations.

The collection uses interlocking components so each piece can be put together without the use of any me-tallic parts. The adhesives used are all formaldehyde-free and water-ba-sed. All of the finishes are natural wax. The only me-tal used is aluminium, an endlessly recyclable material. The textile fibres used for all of the upholstery are linen, wool and cotton. The lighting uses only low energy consumption LEDs.

ERGO represents what is needed to enjoy the bedroom in a fluid and basic way. The bed and chaise lounge with their soft, reassuring contours; the chandelier suspended like an impalpable cloud; the valet stand with its generous profile; the large chest of drawers and floor lamp with aluminium stems reminiscent of thin branches; and the coordinated rug and mirror, created without lead paints. The result is a ‘landscape’ with a lightweight yet robust design, in which each component recalls the tactile and visual qualities of nature, which accompanies mankind’s gestures and life experiences.

The collection is an investigation into organic design – the empathy that arises between matter and function, and between the objects we shape and their ability to respect the world around them. The sense of peace and safety the ergonomic shapes provide envelope the whole space, looking outwards beyond its four walls, seeking a deeper and more harmonious meaning that can capture our love for nature with a renewed approach to sustainability.
