the brief: "half filled, used once"E-commerce is a growing rapidly and it offers a great many challenges and opportunities to packaging manufacturers. Home delivered groceries, courier deliveries or whatever other route that products take all bring special considerations that need to be addressed. One of the most controversial areas is the number and size of non-returnable cardboard boxes that are half filled, used once and need to be recycled. Surely we can do better?areas for improvement identified from existing packagesopening experience | scripting placement | deterring package theft | weather resistance
final designOn the consumer end, damage is avoided by providing a clear and simple opening experience—mitigating one of the main issues identified in research. At the warehouse, to aid fast and repeatable turnaround, adhesives are replaced with friction fit tabs and reprogrammable components, eliminating cleaning as well as allowing for certain tasks to be automated. To meet the compact storage requirement, the two part design allows for efficient stacking, each halve nesting naturally in the next, while the difference in colour and stacking orientation help easy differentiation—preventing sorting errors that could hinder turnaround.
