AR-MLB is a smart Umpire helmet that uses augmented reality technology to display the batter’s strike zone and pitch trails to help Umpires make calls. The goal is to increase the speed and accuracy of the calls. Although Minor League ba-seball has begun to experiment with robot umpires, the game’s human aspect is subconsciously diminished. AR-MLB, on the other hand, preserves ba-seball’s human element by assisting umpires rather than replacing them in making decisions.
The helmet of AR-MLB supports many physical and digital features, including a removable mask panel for reviewing runners, direct replay access and voice communication to discuss plays with fellow Umpires. Using VR headsets, AR- MLB also allows fans to visually experience the game through the umpire’s perspective. The helmet camera could stream detailed footage of everything from a home run swing to a jaw-dropping curveball that no traditional broadcasting camera could provide.
