Nemo is a swimming aid designed for one-armed amputees to help them swim smoothly and correctly. Nemo compensates for the missing limb in water through a study focused on fluid dynamics and anthropometric measurements, equalising the bulk and hydrodynamics of the functioning limb.
The first component is a neoprene sock designed to fit the prosthesis up to the mid-biceps, to which is glued (via epoxy resin) a rigid socket with a toe cap. The prosthesis, which is made of the same material as the socket, connects to the first component via a spring-loaded bayonet joint mechanism. With insights from bionics and the relationship between hydrodynamics and shape, the aid considers the most appropriate shape and material for prosthetic devices, the individual’s unique situation, and the structure of the transradial prothesis.
