Lumo Tap Cobra Design Competition 2013

The Lumo tap is a product with a “magical blend of form and function”, with a combination of traditional and new technology. The Lumo range of taps will be part of Cobra’s sleek, innovative style collection. The aesthetic appeal and functionality of the Lumo tap provides a distinctive design for any home. It will transform any mediocre bathroom or kitchen. In terms of standard components the Lumo tap uses a basic screw down mechanism used in the 3306ST-15-BIB TAP. The material used for the inner part of the Lumo tap is made from DZR brass, which is the standard approved material for most Cobra taps. The outer shell component is made from Polycarbonate with a scratch resistance coating. Polycarbonate is a durable and impact resistant polymer that provides the Lumo tap with a contemporary high gloss finish. The exterior components made from Polycarbonate are easy to clean, can be used in water and the high gloss finish creates a hygienic look and feel. The water flows from the hot inlet on the left and from the cold inlet on the right to the center before flowing out of the nozzle. The nozzle is designed to provide a gentle flow of water. The water divides in the centre through the tiny holes in the nozzle into small streams, creating a wide, but gentle flow of water that wets the users hands faster. This larger nozzle area and intelligent nozzle design provides a water flow that is more effective and saves water.

The hot and cold water inlets are orientated so that the water flows horizontally out of the wall, similar to the DA-066TUWT150 Bath/Basin spout. Sensors measuring the flow of water and a control unit are hidden behind the wall, allowing for a simplistic tap design. A window in the outer polycarbonate shell, along the flow of the tap mixer, is designed for a LED light display, which indicates the water temperature that’s flowing through the tap. The LED lights are placed between the outer polycarbonate shell and inner DZR brass part. A diffuser is placed in front of the LED lights to create a single light display. The control unit activates the LED lights as water flows through the tap and also indicates when the water mixes by “mixing” the colours.A perfect contemporary design where form follows function. The Lumo tap is the tap of the future.
