LOTTE Chemical, a maker of plastics, has made continued efforts to enhance material functionality while also improving the UX of finished products made with its functional materials. Two representative examples are the LDS (Laser Direct Structuring) material and MID (Molded Interconnected Device), a design concept that combines the functionality of this specific material with a new UX.
Through the me-tal plating process, LDS material can be formed into electrodes. Even if no PCB (printed circuit board) is installed during the design process, the material in question can serve as a medium for electrical signals to be transmitted through bu-ttons, knobs and switches in products. This distinct advantage is suitable for slim and seamless product design because it reduces the number of required components and allows for slimmer housing when compared to the traditional manufacturing process that relies on PCB.
Furthermore, because electrodes of various shapes (such as curves, straight lines and right angles) can be formed, the material can be applied to a wide range of currently manufactured products. LDS material was primarily used in internal components of products. The material’s application are expanded to components that are visible to users in order to find ways to enhance user satisfaction in terms of the UX.
