Winter sports aficionados have an inherent interest in protecting the environment, because many of the negative impacts of climate change are already evident on the pistes. This is one reason why the Swedish mountain sports brand Spektrum Sports prefers to use bio-based materials. In making the Bunner ski helmet, for example, the company used a plastic based on castor bean oil. Not only does this material boast natural origins; it also has important properties that meet all helmet safety criteria. The Bunner’s shell is structurally strong, durable and light, offering excellent protection to all piste users, whether they’re on snowboards or skis. Specifically developed for free-riders – people who love to explore the mountains and go beyond limits – the Bunner incorporates several other features to maximise comfort and safety, even in extreme situations. An easy-to-use climate control system optimises airflow and makes vent regulation possible at the touch of a button. The fit of the helmet can also be individually regulated, and the comfortable Merino wool liner is detachable and washable. Easily removable earpads facilitate additional temperature regulation, and the helmet has a special strap that keeps the user’s goggles firmly attached, its oversized band adding to the product’s signature aesthetic. The Recco reflector helps mountain patrol teams to locate people in avalanche rescues. “It isn’t easy to develop a new design language for this kind of product,” remarked the jury. And that isn’t all they had to say about Spektrum Sports’ ski helmet: “The concept for connecting and integrating the individual parts, such as the earpads, is both simple and very clever. Even the graphics are perfect for the overall look.” The jury also mentioned how the Bunner effectively exudes reliability and conveys a sense of safety.
