When W.C. Coleman debuted his Quick-Lite lantern in 1916, he marketed the device to farmers looking to stretch the workday. As electrification spread to rural areas, he rebranded the device as an outdoorsman's essential, and when the popularity of camping skyrocketed after WW II, Coleman lanterns lit up the woods. As the Saturday Evening Post wrote: "Except for Thomas A. Edison, Mr. Coleman may be responsible for the creation of more bright light than any other man." As we approach 2016, the Coleman Corporation will reach 100 years of production for their fuel lantern. Design Objective Develop Coleman's newest fuel lantern to mark 100 years of production.
Inspiration
The service door located on the back side of the lantern provides coverage for the pump and refil cap. With these elements hidden, the lamp is able to maintain a clean modern styling. The service door also keeps the crucial inner workings of the lamp protected from the elements and potential damage. A simple half round slot on the door makes it easy to pull out, while a catch on the main body keeps the door shut.
